These boxes are the type that I build and used for the last 4 years on my owl trail, (9 'sites' that I monitor with 1 or 2 boxes per site).

Please see my http://owloasis.wordpress.com blog for an in-depth look my monitoring records and more info on the boxes.
Just (as of Jan 2014) started a new kind of user participation section:

Boxes are made from ~ 1″ x 8″ (front , back, floor) and ~ 1″ x 10″ (roof and sides) ‘rough cut’ (This is true dimention lumber, yielding a floor ~ 8″ x 8″) White Pine lumber from local saw mill. This means it is unfinished and unsanded wood, and subject to some variation, but the rough texture allows easy gripping on the front and interior to make it easy for the owls and hopefully owlets to grasp and climb up and down. A vinyl covering on the sides and roof, combined with a steep roof makes it difficult (but probably not impossible) for squirrels to enter from the top or sides. Placement is key, needs to be on a clean straightish trunk, with no other trunks or branches with in about 8 feet of the front, If squirrels can jump to the front they can and will use the box. It comes with either a 3" circle entrance or a 3"x8" slot entrance, Please specify Circle or Slot entrance when ordering.

I give the sides a quick painting for a camouflaged look, I like them to blend into the surroundings,

External deck screws and stainless steel staples are used exclusively for construction. Also comes with an attached pressure treated backing board and 4 mounting screws to attach it to a tree.

Wood shavings are NOT included,
Helpful tip?...for the boxes I monitor I scrape up 2-3 inches of dry old bark mulch and crumpled dry leaves.
Both types are front opening boxes, there is a single screw at the bottom of the front panel, unscrew and pivot front upwards to access box to clean out or add leaves/bark mulch/ wood shavings.

These are larger than normal box because of the slope on the roof, with the backing board its almost 3 feet tall.
