1-7/8” in diameter by about 1/8” thick. Thick bale is about 1/2" long by about 1/8” wide and a little over 1/16” thick. Leather cord (a much later addition) measures about 27” long.

Obverse - The Madonna and Child are enameled in shades of pale and dark green, pale and dark blue and silver. The Child sits in the Mother’s lap and holds a globus cruciger, a Christian symbol of dominion popularly used throughout the Middle Ages. The surface has a "hammered" look and the central figures are surrounded by silver "studs."

Reverse - Features a prayer in Latin to our Lady which reads, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus Nunc et in Hora Mortis Nostrae (Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and in the hour of our death), Amen.

Hallmarks - Both the medal and thick, sterling silver bale are stamped on their edges with the maker’s mark (in the diamond-shaped stamp) and the French sterling silver hallmark (in the roundish stamp). Both have acquired a lovely soft silvery-grey patina and are in excellent condition with no sign of wear.

History - Elijah (Ellie) Pellegrin was born Le Seyne-sur Mer in 1914 and won numerous awards for his work.
