Refrain from using chemical/liquid jewelry cleaners, as they can do more harm than good. Instead, use a gently polishing cloth, when needed, that is designed for jewelry cleaning.

Gold Filled Jewelry vs. Gold Plated Jewelry vs. 'Genuine' Gold Jewelry

Gold-filled jewelry has a thick pressure-bound layer of genuine gold (usually 9kt-18kt) over a metal base alloy. Gold-filled jewelry has 100x more gold alloy than gold plated, and because that layer is so much thicker, it means gold-filled jewelry lasts longer and stands up to wear-and-tear better than gold plated items. Gold filled also has the same desirable visual appeal and outcome as genuine gold products with a much more affordable price tag. Most 'genuine' gold products aren't even 100% gold; the number and karat weight (kt) indicates how much gold is in the actual product, so the higher the number, the more gold is in it. Each karat indicates 1/24th of the whole, meaning 24kt gold is the only pure gold product.

What is Vermeil? Sterling Silver vs. Vermeil

Vermeil is a sterling silver base with a layer of genuine gold (10k+ and at least 2.5 microns thick) electroplated on top of it. Vermeil has the desirable appeal of gold jewelry at a much lower cost, and is great for those with sensitive skin. Vermeil does require to be treated like sterling silver as it can tarnish. Do not expose it to water to prevent tarnishing, and keep it in an air-tight bag when you're not wearing it. Sterling silver is at least 92.5% pure silver with the rest of the percentage being another metal, such as copper. The mixture of another metal helps increase its durability and resistance to tarnishing, while still being skin-safe and good for people with sensitive skin. Pure silver is rarely ever made into jewelry.
