The richly colored Black Locust is a wood that turns well. Its bark edge compliments the rich colors of the wood; however the bark connection is very weak. Thus I saturate that interface with a clear adhesive to strengthen the connection of bark to wood. By adding adhesive the bark became stronger and hardens to withstand the turning process, sanding, polishing and later use.

This Black Locust piece is finished with Deft Danish Oil which is a penetrating tung oil urethane. Its translucent formula brings out the natural beauty of wood, and does not mask the wood grain. There are 8 to 10 hand-rubbed coats of finish on this piece, these coats will provide more protection and enhance the colors of Black Locust.

#746 Wood Identified, Signed and Dated by the Artist

Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) is a medium-sized tree, growing up to 80 feet tall. Black locust has great structural strength, longevity, and is rot resistant. Brought from the East Coast by pioneers numerous trees were planted at the time of the California Gold Rush. The uses for this wood are endless, boat building, flooring, stairs, mantles, support timbers for barns and mines, fence posts (Abraham Lincoln spent much of his time splitting rails and fence posts from black locust logs), house trim and framing, garden arbors, and even xylophone keys!
