Fairuza's altar was in a clearing surrounded by a grove of honey locust trees; their long, wicked-looking thorns served as reminders of their ancestors' response to enormous, ancient herbivores. Beyond it was thick, tenebrous wood, through which no path had ever been cut. Fairuza knew the way through, but strangers were apt to lose their bearings and walk in circles for hours, or days, without assistance. An entire battalion from an invading foreign army was lost to the woods once, after attempting to pass through as a shortcut. They were never seen on the other side, and they never returned the way they came. Their fate was a secret only the forest knew, and forest held secrets well, as trees always keep their own counsel.

As she tread through the understory, a coal black cat with peridot eyes padded after her silently. Fairuza could not see the way in the night as the cat could, but she knew it just the same. Finally reaching the altar, she knelt to arrange the charms. When they were oriented to her satisfaction, she paused to gather her words. When she began to speak, a low, strange mist crept in from the dark of the trees...
