It is believed that Ammonites lived in the mid- to late-Paleozoic Era (approx. 500 million years ago) through the Mesozoic Era (approx. 65 million years ago). They disappeared around the same time as dinosaurs did. Most Ammonite species had tightly-coiled, chambered, spiral shells.

Ammonite is named for the Egyptian god Ammon because he wore ram's horns which resembled its shape. Ammonite was considered by ancient Egyptian and Roman societies to have magical and holy powers. Opalized Ammonites are sometimes called “Trapped light of the ages.” The iridescent colors are typically white, red, or green, although the entire rainbow spectrum is possible.

In Eastern cultures, shells in general are considered good luck and prosperity. They symbolize the higher forces of the universe and their shape is claimed to attract and store wealth. In Feng Shui, Ammonites represent the harmonious balance of fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. They enhance the flow of Chi (life energy), radiate strength, and transform negative energy into positive energy.
