The trend of the Victorian era wedding ring were introduced by the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 – 1901. During this period there are two notable events that bring changes in style and composition of jewelry. The first being that after 1854 the gold standards changed and jewelers were legally allowed to create 15K gold, 12K gold, and 9K gold items and sell them at market. Secondly, in 1870 the South African Diamond mines opened leading to the beginning of large diamond popularity.

In the mid-Victorian era, silver was more affordable, and the different composition of gold carat rose in popularity. Victorian wedding rings from this era are made of silver and different gold alloys (18k, 15k, 12k and 9k). Rose gold rings cast from gold alloyed with copper were very popular during this period. Couples looking for rose gold vintage antique wedding rings must use this era as a starting point for their search.
