"Snowbanks by the River"

36" x 24" acrylic on canvas

2012 Blake Brasher

I've been working on expanding my pallet. Really, I have. While it might be folly, I start to feel a bit formulaic when I see the same vibrant reds, blues, and yellows come out in painting after painting. And so here I decided to use a lot of pastels by mixing everything down with a fair amount of semi-transparent white.

A number of my recent paintings have been long, tortured affairs which have started on the canvas, moved to the floor, had puddles of paint thrown at them, been allowed to dry, moved back to the easel, attacked with an arsenal of brushes, scraped off with the pallet knife, moved back to the floor, smeared with more paint, et cetera et cetera until somehow they fight their way through my relenting assault to emerge as complete compositions.

This little gem was different. It touched upon a memory at the very first brush stroke. It has been raised with a more delicate hand than its siblings. Never once did it leave the easel during its composition. Nor did I threaten it with the pallet knife.

The pink and blue whites in this painting take me back to my childhood in the Alaskan wilderness. I grew up in a town called North Pole a bit outside of Fairbanks. We had a lot of snow. Halloween involved snowsuits over costumes and Easter had us searching for egg shaped holes in the still foot deep blanket. But you could walk out of a building and point yourself away from the entry way and there was a very good chance that there was not another human being or any sign of human beings in your line of sight. It's a feeling I don't get much living in the grand old town of Cambridge, MA, probably the biggest little town in the world with its institutions and academics, startups and spinoffs, writers, poets, and puppeteers (but none too many painters).

Also, we haven't gotten much snow here at all this winter. For the most part I am glad for this. From a practical standpoint snow is terrible in the city. It's terrible most anywhere, I suppose. But I do like those days and nights where there is so much snow that the city halts to a stop and nobody goes anywhere except for out into the streets to play a little before the ploughs arrive to turn it all into grimy mounds upon the sidewalks.

"Snowbanks by the River" is painted on a 3/4" profile gallery wrapped canvas suitable for hanging without a frame. It is supplied with a hanging wire for easy installation upon your very best wall.
