We are exploring the retablo - the little altar - as an art form. Instead of filling them with saints or madonnas, we are filling them with scarabs or skulls.

This retablo features a beetle that looks like a scarab crossed with a red milkweed beetle - a colorful insect we sometimes glimpse in Appalachia. The scarab is surrounded by blueish leaves and little cup-like flowers filled with melted glass.

The retablo has a hanger on the back. It is 3.5 x 4.5 inches (8.9cm x 11.4cm).

Each retablo is formed by hand and unique.
