This Matcha Chawan is glazed with Shino, Wood Ash and Copper Oxide and fired in my small updraft gas kiln. The subtle iridescence of the glaze on this Chawan is a result of creating an oxygen starved environment within the kiln at just the right point in the firing. This effect is often illusive and is effected by many factors like, glaze thickness, how the glaze dries, the time between glazing and firing the work and the actual firing schedule. All of this can lead to some frustration, at times, but I do love a challenge.

The Multi-colored areas on this piece are the result of the Copper reducing during the firing resulting in what is know as a Copper Red effect, although, many other colors are also present. The visual effect of the copper flowing gives a clue to the activeness of this glaze when being fired, stopping at just the right spot.

Dimensions: 3-1/4"h. x 5"dia. @ widest point.
Weight: 14 ounces
