Decoys have been used for generations to attract and delight the eye. An ideal gift for him, Gordon Swenarton's decoys are created in the same manner as functional decoys, but is just as at home on display.

Accessorized with weathered metal elements and eyes, the wooden body is outfitted with a lead weight. The decoy is then painted with durable enamel, shellacked, and antiqued to perfection.

Measures approximately: 6"L x 3.75"W.
Signed and dated by the artist, Gordon Swenarton, 2003.

HISTORY
The fish decoy is a lure, without hooks, used in winter spear fishing to attract fish within spearing range under a hole chopped in the ice. Winter spear fishing has been practiced for generations in such states as Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and New York due to adequate ice, desirable food fish, and game laws.

The original fish decoys were made of wood, bone, or copper with metal, wood, or leather fins. They were carved realistically or crudely, then painted or left natural. Decoys contain a lead weight to allow it to sink at the end of a line. An experienced fisherman, holding the line, can make the decoy swim about like a real fish. The size of a decoy can vary from 3” to 50” in length. The decoy does not necessarily have to resemble a fish; many critters such as frogs, mice, ducks, turtles, butterflies, and salamanders are represented to attract just the right fish. In the last few years, a real interest in fish decoy collecting, both new and antique, has emerged.

Please note: decoys are not suitable as toys for children.
