Utah Variscite

Lucin Utah Variscite

Variscite is one of the rare exotic turquoise cousins. This deposit is Located near the town of Lucin Utah. This location was a large producer of this material for many years. Like most of the old locations has run out of material and is only found in old stashes. This variscite was a true variscite and formed without a copper influence and was able to form without the many influences that are usually associated with Variscite and variquoise, and turquoise. The variscite here had a true variscite formation and was the standard of comparison of what variscite was to look like. Most were large pieces and chunks and nodules. I have never seen any vein material from this location. The colors were light to a medium apple green and went to what I labeled an Imperial green which was a top apple gemmy translucent green. The matrix pattern for the most part was not there but some did produce some very nice matrix- spiderweb patterns. Most however had little matrix and produced nice large green consistent slices to work with. Most of this was mined many years ago and ended up in foreign sweat shops and made into small mm cabs and beads. The remaining was sold to many rock shops and was for the most part cut up and built into cabs many years ago.So what was common at a point in time is now rare and hard to find. This same story repeats itself with many stones. Common today gone tomorrow. But with the focuss on hot apple to yellow green colors, this material has them.

.As you look at my stones and see the different mines you should see the differences from each mine. They each have similarities but also uniqueness to themselves. Each mine has its truely own look. This stone is cut from old material from this very interesting mine.Variscite is a material that is rare and is formed with other influences that occur in nature with turquoise. Nature adds another metal or lack of a certain metal and it forms very similar to turquoise and is a couisin of turquoise. Most of the variscite from this mine is a lime Green. The color can reach what I call an imperial green that is transluecent and an apple green. The green shades and formations are unique to this mine. Every mine has its own character and forms different and requires different teckniques to cut it. I cut the stone and then back it also. Which is how we cut stone in the southwest the standard method for this industry. I cut turquoise for my jewelry designs as well as for the large manufacturers. I have been cutting turquoise for 35 years now and cut turquoise to last in jewelry. My jewelry that has my stones in in lasts a life time. Turquoise and variscite are very special and very unique stones and very misunderstood and very few truely professional turquoise cutters exist in the USA.I have cut thousands of pounds of turquoise from all the old mines. I deal directly with the mine owners and I pick my rough from thousands of pounds avaialable. I try to pick rough that has very unique colors and patterns. You will see this is my cabs.If you are looking for a special look in turquoise or from a certain mine send me a email. I have a huge stock and probally have what you need.
