Description

Often on trash day, people put out old windows that they have replaced with the new energy efficient ones. Not being able to fit in a recycling bin, the windows often sit there until the garbage truck comes along, taking them to the landfill. I see them and think about all the possibility that lies within those panes, I just can't pass them by. I stop and put them into the back of my truck, and bring them to the studio to await for a new life.

One day someone called asking if I could make a glass feather, and I thought this might be the perfect use for some of that glass. I cut the glass into the feather shape, and then paint it using glass stain. I am careful to create the brush marks on the glass, to give the look of the individual hairs in a feather. To make the stain permanent, I heat the feathers in a kiln, firing them at a high temperature.

This feather a deep rich brown. It hangs from a strong plastic filament attached to a metal hanger which is securely fixed to the feather using a reliable epoxy glue. I placed the hanger near the end of the feather, so it hangs vertically. Unlike some of my other feathers, this one lays completely flat. Colors on glass are difficult to capture in a photo, as it looks different depending on the light. The stain is deep brown, which looks darker in the shade than in direct sunlight. The photos on the wooden plank were taken in the North American winter sunlight, slightly shaded to prevent glare. The matte finish is on the painted side, the glossy photo is of the other side. The hanging photos were taken in the shade with light diffused coming in from behind.

I can create these feathers in many colors and combinations, from life like to fantasy. Convo me if there is a special one you would like me to create for you.

This feather measures 7.25" long and weighs about one ounce, but I recommend hanging any glass that you love from a secure frame such as a nail sunk into a wooden frame, as suction cups can be disappointingly unreliable.

I ship using USPS ground shipping, but can speed things up, or ship overseas if you are
