During the 19the century, even before the Civil War, many women's magazines published full size sewing and craft patterns. This pattern first appeared in a magazine called "Iris", in 1855. Iris was published from 1849-1875 in Graz, Austria.

Patterns include Bodice for Riding Habit and Pattern of Mantle-Shawl. Embroidery patterns included collar with ends, wide edges, braiding patterns, etc.
