Designed after the seventeenth-century canal houses of the Dutch Golden Age, this modern form represents a sense of home - in this case, in the tall row houses of Holland still standing today as they did in early art and photography, when they hosted Dutch artists such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer and Paulus Potter. Form and texture arch and bend the shadows around this clay architectural object.

The remarkable colors are achieved with the methods I love from the Old World, with authentic and precious pigments ground by big granite millstones in the windmill De Kat in Holland. The windmill's 21 meter sails have powered the grinding of Earth's minerals into color for Dutch artists since 1781. Some, quarried from Italy, France, Bohemia, Afghanistan, and Spain, are the first ancient pigments known to primitive artists. Methods developed in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries of weathering minerals, or extracting naturally occurring minerals from bits of earth, volcanic rock, semi-precious stone, vegetables and metals are often the same methods used today in the old world pigments I use in my work. Even in ancient times, they were known as the most beautiful colors imaginable. I hope that you treasure these old pigments as much as I do.
