ARR! The Pirate life! What inspired me to make this broken stitched up heart? I'm a big fan of Melissa Auf der Maur - there is a lyric in her song "Follow the Map" that goes..."Leather skin with a broken heart... a good seaman turns to piracy". A pirates tale would not be complete without a secret map...and there is one on the back of this black heart, crumpled and aged...leading you to...hmmm ...who knows... ;-).
What I love best about this heart is the fact that during the creation process it developed a "wound" at the top which I sliced open exposing the inside of the blister creating a lovely opening - perfect in it's imperfection.
This hand sculpted polymer clay creation has been "mended" using silver plated wire and is finished at the top with a small red rose (A symbol of the woman who broke his heart).
I loved making a whole series of these hearts, each with a map on the back. Each one had it's own unique character.

The heart hangs from what I like to call a "Frankenstein" bale, measures 2 inches wide by 2 inches tall and is strung on bunya (solid rubber) cord the total length measures 17". The necklace is finished with a lobster clasp.
