Natural Wood Talisman *Alder* Faery Star for Altar or Pocket!

Featured in a beautiful treasury containing all the things needful for a Faery altar by crowquills here: http://www.etsy.com/treasury/MTY4MjIxNTR8MjUzNjc4NTIzOQ/fairy-altar?ref=pr_treasury

This is a truly stunning talisman for you to place on your altar or other sacred space, or anywhere in your home. It's just about small enough to be carried in your pocket as a worry stone and is remarkably tactile when held in your hand. The colour is an incredibly intense orangey tan, similar to the shade of autumn bracken or Beech leaves but much brighter. I've left the dark brown bark around the edge, but the outer surface is almost covered in patches of lichen in various shades of green and khaki. It's a really superb piece, deserving of a place of honour in your home and guaranteed to gain compliments from everyone who sees it.

Alder trees are traditionally seen as guardians of portals and/or barriers, and the door to the Faery Realm was said to be in the trunk of an Alder tree. Add to that the extremely strong links this tree has always had with the Fae and you'll fully understand why this beautiful piece of Alder wood just HAD to have a Faery symbol on it!

The symbol is a septagram or seven pointed star, that has been adopted by practitioners of Faery Wicca as a sacred symbol and shares a similar place within that tradition to that which the more well known pentacle does within both standard Witchcraft and modern Wicca. It has been burnt into the surface of the wood in exactly the same way as I burn my pentacles and runes, so it will not chip off or wear away. Finally, the whole thing has been given a liberal coat of oil to protect and enhance the wood. Don't worry, this soaks in and does NOT leave the surface greasy!

Alder is said to be good for controlling and banishing elementals, especially of fire or water as the tree has strong links with both elements, and it can apparently be used for the healing of wounds. The tree is the guardian of the portal of the Faery Realm, and oversees all types of portals, boundaries and watersheds. It is allegedly attracted to water, so is used for dowsing. Legend has it that the Alder tree is a favourite of the Elven King's daughter. It is strongly associated with resurrection.

NOTE: I do not recommend Alder for “whistling up the winds” or any other weather magic, as that particular magical use is based on the twigs of the Alder tree being hollow, thus enabling witches (or anyone else) to make them into pipes. I have never been altogether happy with this supposed tradition because I have never found a twig of Alder that is either hollow to begin with or would be easily hollowed out! I have long suspected that this particular magical use has been mistakenly attributed to the Alder, and would actually be more relevant to the wood of the Elder tree, which does often have hollow twigs that do indeed make excellent pipes for many purposes. I have noticed that people commonly confuse Alder and Elder when simply reading about them, although the two trees are very different once you see them. Therefore, the “weather magic” part of the properties is not included; but I've stuck with wound healing as that tradition is based on the fact that Alder appears to bleed when cut due to the sap turning red when exposed to the air, and I know that’s true. I've never been one to blindly swallow someone else's ideas and I feel I really have to go with what I know to be true, or at least something I can see the sense in.

Size: About two and three quarter inches across and five eighths of an inch thick.
71mm x 69mm x 14-17mm.

It will come with a list of the magical properties of the wood, a picture and care instructions.
