An incredible, very finely three-strata shell cameo in a gold fill setting from the late 1940s. The cameo may be worn as pendant or a brooch - the top bail swivels down out of sight. The piece is large and finely detailed, measuring almost 2" tall. The shell has three carved layers - a background (creamy, shiny pink), the carved bust (ivory) and a few areas of higher relief on the hair and collar (light brown). The carving is done in high relief and features the bust of a young woman with a collared top, curled hair and elegant earrings. The details of the lady, right down to her eyebrow and the gathering fabric around her shoulders, are remarkable. The frame of the cameo features two bands of coiling, which is typical of this style. The setting is 12K gold fill. There is no visible damage or wear. An outstanding piece.
