FAROE ISLANDS ARCHITECTURE ART OBJECT (1) Ultramarine Rose.

Form and texture arch and bend the shadows around this clay architectural object. Designed after the stone foundations and grass rooftops of the houses of the Faroe Islands, this modern form represents a sense of home - in this case, amidst the jutting rocky islands in the sea between Iceland and Norway - a land that is breathtakingly pure and naturally beautiful.

This art object is a part of my Survey of European Architecture series. I'm an American sculptor living and working across Europe, taking inspiration from the old world. These small slip-cast solid-core ceramic houses present raw stone-like surfaces that capture textural details of old Europe in a contemporary aesthetic. I create, sign and date each piece here in my atelier in Europe.

The remarkable colors are achieved with the methods I love from the Old World, with authentic and precious pigments ground by big granite millstones in the windmill De Kat in Holland. The windmill's 21 meter sails have powered the grinding of Earth's minerals into color for Dutch artists since 1781. Some, quarried from Italy, France, Bohemia, Afghanistan, and Spain, are the first ancient pigments known to primitive artists. Methods developed in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries of weathering minerals, or extracting naturally occurring minerals from bits of earth, volcanic rock, semi-precious stone, vegetables and metals are often the same methods used today in the old world pigments I use in my work. Even in ancient times, they were known as the most beautiful colors imaginable. I hope that you treasure these old pigments as much as I do.
