Description: A rare import Rolling Stones compilation LP here in the States; in fact, in all of my years of record collecting, this is the only copy I’ve ever come across to my knowledge. This is a 1969 German compilation originally put out by Decca in 1969, though this is a 1975 reprint on a label called Nova; seeing as this is a licensed Decca product, no detectable sound discrepancy is apparent, rather it sounds really clean and bright. Not only is this a rather rare collection, but it also contains a peculiar song selection, which in my estimation is for the better in this case. You will not find the big hits such as “Satisfaction”, “Get Off My Cloud”, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” et. al.—in fact the only thing resembling a hit here is “Mother’s Little Helper”. Calling this collection “Great Hits” may have been an erroneous decision on behalf of the compilers, though “Great Songs” would not have been as it contains a lot of excellent lesser-known Stones deep cuts. Side 1 consists of material from the Stones’ more experimental 1966/67 baroque-ish pop rock phase that was evident on “Aftermath” and “Between The Buttons” (“Yesterday’s Papers”, “I Am Waiting”) while Side 2 concentrates on cover tunes such as Chuck Berry’s “Around And Around”, “Bye, Bye Johnny” and Muddy Waters’ “I Just Want To Make Love To You” and “I’m a King Bee”. While these may not be the titles that immediately come to mind when thinking of The Rolling Stones, they are certainly some of the best examples of the the early rock and roll/hard R&B years that they perfected as their signature in trade sound over the last fifty years. A highly recommended albeit idiosyncratic collection.

Condition: I grade very conservatively according to Goldmine Record Grading 101 Guidelines (http://www.goldminemag.com/tag/goldmine-price-guides)

Vinyl: VG++ (8.5/10); vinyl is shiny and virtually free of defects; plays very clean with minimal surface noise or wear; very impressive condition on this rare find.
Cover: VG+ (7.5/10); as is the case with most imports, the cover jacket is made of thin cardstock and is quite flimsy, as a result then the biggest problem with the jacket is bend marks on all sides; there are indentations on the front and back covers about 1/3 of the way down and centered, my guess is that the damage is from being stored next to a zipper copy of the Stones’ Sticky Fingers LP. LP is stored in a generic white insert sleeve.
