Fabulous and scarce vintage graduated slag glass bead necklace in a mix of chocolate brown with caramel and creamy swirled colors. The necklace was created using an old Czech brass filigree bead and tongue clasp (c. 1918-38), and so was more "recently" restrung. It was well done, with hand knotting in between, and drapes beautifully. Because of the Art Deco clasp style, I am unable to accurately date the necklace, but feel strongly the beads themselves are antique c. 1900, perhaps even older. It is in excellent antique condition, and has seams where the two halves were press-molded together. It is one bead “shy” at the end from being balanced or equal, but considering its rarity, is a small deficit. One would never notice this when being worn. I just love the intense whirl of contrasting, saturated colors.

ABOUT SLAG GLASS: Slag glass was press molded then fired. It was originally produced in Northeast England, but only for a short period of time from the mid-1800’s to the early 1900’s. It was also produced in America by several companies, and from my research, is much less common in brown colors, of which this would be an example. It is also known as “brown malachite” or "marble beads", though not all beads called “marble” are press-molded. The process of making slag glass was apparently very difficult, as there was a fair amount of breakage while being fired. The goal was to create glass with distinct bands of color without muddying, and this beautiful necklace exhibits that characteristic. To my eye, the glass beads look like banded agate.

This item will be presented in a pouch and gift boxed.

SIZE: 18”L with the center bead ¾” diameter
