I had no idea what this was when I first came across it, I just knew it was old and strange and would be perfect for my family's annual white elephant gift exchange. Well after some research and some info from another Etsy member with more knowledge of the Victorian era, I determined this is a Vintage Victorian toy taxidermy lion circa 1860-1900. Apparently these were sold as souvenirs to children at the zoo. During the Victorian era, people were fascinated by nature, plants, animals, insects, etc.. Taxidermy was in fashion. So this is not true taxidermy (meaning it is obviously not a real lion,) but it is made with some sort of real animal fur. I did not find many examples, in my research online, and I didn't see any other lions, so I think it must be rare. He is in remarkable condition, considering his age. He does have a spot below his nose where there is some fur loss. You can see it in the second picture. But overall, he is a mighty fine specimen.
If anyone looking at this listing has anymore information on this subject, or if anyone else has seen another lion like this, I would love to hear from you!
I am happy to answer any questions you might have. International buyers, please message me for shipping information. Thanks for stopping by!
