Vintage 1800s Victorian Bustle Dress Plaid Antique Steampunk Skirt and Top For Repair or Holloween Costume

A wonderful piece of Victorian era vintage for study or repair. It came with a little written family history that says "Lily Brown's dress - Born 1872 Died 1953. My grandmother Rosella (Brown) Dunmoyer's sister. Rosella (Brown) Dunmoyer. Marilyn's grandma. Her sister's dress."

The top is in overall fair to poor condition. The plaid fabric has withstood the test of time pretty well, however, the velvet has not and actually becomes powdery when handled. The velvet on the arms has been hand stitched to the plaid fabric and could just be removed. But the velvet on the top has been stitched directly onto the lining, so it would need to be relaced.

The skirt is in wearable condition and is made of an abundance of fabric in the back to accomodate a bustle (I stuffed some paper under it to show how it is supposed to look). I don't own a bustle, but if I keep eating Girl Scout cookies, I might grow one:) The skirt closes with an opening at one of the two front pleats, but does not have a button or a buttonhole. It is longer in the back because of the bustle styling and is fully lined. It has been shortened but could be easily let down again to it's original length, as the fabric was just turned up and not cut.

The top is very cleverly styled with a detailing of front pleats which accomodates a range of bust sizes. It closes with hook and eyes; is fully lined; and has Lillie Brown's name written on it.

It fits my dress form, so it appears to be a modern size 0-2. Both the bottom of the bodice and the waist of the skirt measure 24". The mannequin measures 32.5" bust and a 24" waist.

Condition: Skirt is in fair to good vintage condition and is very wearable.
Top is in fair to poor condition: velvet is deteriorating but plaid fabric is good.
