Lovely dark brown wooden primitive tramp art picture frame with 5 openings for your photographs or old postcards. These are becoming almost impossible to find. I think of Tramp Art and a little known and truly amazing art form.

Another great find from the Gospel Chicken House auction in Virginia.

What is "tramp art"?

Tramp art is a type of folk or outsider art made from thin pieces of wood, shaped and notched to "create pieces of startling texture and harmony...Seemingly Gothic in ornamentation and decoration, the layers, although sometimes crude, can be decorative and elegant..."

Examples of this kind of "chip carving" are found all around the world. Oral histories indicate that most tramp art was made by working class men such as stonemasons, bricklayers, miners. Few of the makers ever thought of themselves as artists. They made picture frames, boxes, sewing kits, clocks, racks, cabinets, and match safes - things that had everyday practical use. Shellac or paint were used to seal and preserve. Most of the pieces we have today were created anonymously.
