When I found this beautiful old piece, it was covered in the ugliest grayish green paint that resembled mud! I knew that beneath this hideous mask, a special piece would emerge and after 2 days of work, it did! This Vintage/Antique BISCUIT JAR was most likely made in JAPAN somewhere between the 1930's and the late 1940's. It is a lovely Yellow color with light and dark Pink Flowers and Lime Green Vines around the entire piece. A wide black rim encircles the lip of the jar, where the lid meets it. The mold of the jar actually shows a wonderful pattern of it's own with an overall dotted design as well as the flowers, vines and leaves. Some were painted and some were not, leaving an amazing decorative design. The jar itself has 6 sides with scallops around each side. Each of the two side handles are 3 dimensional flowers, as is the handle of the lid. These are deep pink with yellow centers and very detailed, as is this entire piece. The original woven reed (?) handle is still in place (which amazed me as so many are long gone!), however one side has split, meaning you cannot pick the jar up using the handle, but it displays beautifully with this slit facing the back. There is the normal age crazing that one would expect in a piece of this age, but the only chip I see is one, very small one, on the underside of the Lid. Great Condition for a piece of this age that was painted over by someone who preferred "mud" to yellow! The bottom shows the most crazing, followed by the inner portion of the jar. The outer crazing is much less noticeable and uniform. There are some small "flakes" on the bottom of the inside jar, that appear to be tiny pieces of glaze.

The jar measures approx. 8" tall and is about 6" across. If you need exact measurements, please ask and I will be happy to forward them. "MADE IN JAPAN" is seen in black lettering at the bottom of the piece, in inkstamp that looks to have been done beneath the glaze.
