The Giving Bowl is an international campaign for “incidental altruism” (giving without going without). The concept is simple - buy a bowl, throw your spare change in it each day and when it's full - donate to your favourite charity or cause.

Of course, you don't have to use our bowls for giving, they are great for a whole range of uses - throw your keys or jewellery in them, or crafters will love having their nick-knacks handy and organised. They won't scratch your furniture and have a great look while being the most sustainable possible products of their type.

We've gone to great lengths to make sure every aspect of our business has a positive impact on the earth we live in. If you would like to learn more, you can read about our processes below. The profits from the purchase of your Giving Bowl go to Foundation 18’s humanitarian projects in Indonesia, providing education, health care, food and clean drinking water to children at risk.

The Giving Bowl signature felted wool range is our favourite and comes in a range of fashionable colours and four sizes. The bowl pictured demonstrates the basic characteristics of the bowl colour and size but may not be identical to the one you receive. Fortunately, I'm as fussy as you are, so the bowl you receive is guaranteed to be as beautiful as the item pictured.

Because all of our bowls are felted manually every single bowl is unique and, as such, sizes will vary. The sizes below are a guide only. Your Giving Bowl may be slightly bigger or smaller depending on the characteristics of the batch of wool being felted at the time. Check the listing title to see the size the listing relates to.

Mini: 8-9cm wide, 5-6cm high
Small: 9-10cm wide, 6-7cm high
Medium: 11-13cm wide, 6-8cm high
**Large: 15-16cm wide, 6-9cm high

We often think of wool as organic or natural just because it’s not man-made. The commercial sheep industry, however, employs a range of unnatural and even cruel practices to meet the needs of the industry and supply affordable wool.

Our organic wool comes from farms who do not use any synthetic inputs such as dips, drenches, backlines or antibiotics, instead opting for sustainable farming practices with a low impact on the environment. These include clean pasture management, attention to soil health, environmentally sound stock ratios, good nutrition and herbal and homeopathic treatments.

Unlike regular commercial wools, our organic wool is not processed in a cocktail of chemicals to clean or scour the wool. Instead the wool is washed in certified organic, biodegradable detergent, and nothing else.

The wool we use is made from certified organic Australian Merino wool and scoured in a plant that is certified according to the Global Organic Trade Standard. The wool is dyed using the best available low-impact, metal-free dyes.

Our certified organic wool uses only wool which comes from properties which do not practice mulesing.

After each of our Giving Bowls is meticulously hand crocheted on sustainable, un-lacquered bamboo hooks, they enter the felting process which can take 7 – 10 days.

We use only solar-heated collected rain water for felting. We use only certified organic, sustainably-sourced, plant-based detergent which contains no toxic petrochemicals, synthetic dyes, synthetic perfumes, tetra sodium EDTA. It is also free from non-sustainable palm oil products.

Our felting agitation process is entirely manual which saves the environment and gives an excellent upper body work out :) It also allows us to achieve a consistent and high quality felted product.

Our bowls are blocked using recycled plastic products, typically reclaimed shopping bags which are used over and over. After setting and drying we begin the whole felting process over to perfect the finish.

The result is a densely felted, highly sustainable, unique and fashionable bowl.
