This is a hand carved and painted Belted Kingfisher(Ceryle alcyon) that sits a little tree trunk on the shelf or nature display. The Kingfisher set stands about 7" tall. The wood is finished with beeswax & natural oil and is colored with non-toxic color wash. The bird is a good size for the child to hold in their hand while he or she hear the story. The beautiful Kingfisher is a bird of mystery and lore for all of time. He is the subject of myth and legend going back to the Greeks. Traditionally," halcyon days" fall between December 14th and December 27th, the weeks surrounding the winter solstice . The term "halcyon days" signifies days of calm, peace, and tranquility—our hearts’ desire.
In Greek mythology the Kingfisher is in the story of Alcyone, also spelled Halcyone and Ceyx whom were made into Kingfishers so they could be together. The waters were kept calm for the time surrounding the Winter Solstice while they nested.
The female Halcyon bird is said to build a nest of fish bones that floats on the sea, and she tends the nest for the seven days that have the winter solstice at the center. During this time, Aeolus keeps the winds away and the waters are calm, so that his grandchildren are kept safe.
For Kingfishers, the female has the brighter colors, having the russet color on the under side.
In today's world the Kingfisher's presence indicates a healthy environmental habitat. They are a very busy bird that spends the day chatterig as he flies about, stopping to perch on low limbs and to watch the water for a flash of silver as he fishes. The Kingfisher nest is made in a tunnel in the river bank which the parents dig. They are delightful to watch along with water's edge!
