One of a kind, created March 2012

Height 19ins/48cms

Tipi is a doll of mourning and a lost photograph.

In 1940, my Grandmother was separated from her five year old son when the boat transporting them from Singapore was bombed by a German U-boat. In the panic, someone said 'Don't worry, I'll take him!' , and she never saw him again. She was taken to a German POW camp, where she stayed for two years.

Some thirty-odd years later, there she is sitting on the grass in the doorway of my little red and yellow wigwam. I'm standing beside her, dressed up in my Red Indian outfit... everything except the feather headdress, which my Gran is sporting with elan. We're both enjoying the pose. A recluse in later life, she always put on a brave and stylish face in a photo. I think about her in Singapore, glamorous and free and not yet burdened by grief.

The colour yellow is both the colour of madness and of healing.

Tipi is made from calico stuffed with wool, handstitched and painted. Her cotton print dress is handembroidered and all over she is foxed with black paint. Her eyes are embroidered. Her headdress is made from found feathers, remnants of a small death.
