A complete set of vintage letterpress type upper case letters and punctuation 0-9 in 36 point Sans Serif Extrabold Condensed font from an old letterpress print shop in the mountains of Colorado.

This font was designed by Sol Hess (1886-1953), who began at Lanston Monotype in 1902, rising to Typographic Manager in 1922. He was particularly adept at expanding type faces into whole families. He completed 85 faces for the Monotype foundry, making him America’s fourth most prolific type designer. This particular font, Sans Serif Extrabold Condensed, was designed in 1930 and is based on the German typeface designer Rudolph Koch’s font, Kabel. Released by the Klingspor foundry in 1927, Kabel was designed to honor the newly completed trans-Atlantic telephone cable.

I also have this font in this size in all lower case letters with numbers 0-9, as well as in a variety of other point sizes. I can also put together multiple sets if you would like more than one. Please contact me for details.

Each and every piece of letterpress goodness is near and dear to my heart. I keep everything that I can, and I only part with the items that I can't use and that are taking up too much space in our workshop. I'll share with you everything I know about the items.

I acquired this type from a handyman friend, who acquired them from the daughter of an old letterpress printer. In exchange for some work on her house, my friend was given all of the printer's equipment, which had sat, unused, in a cabin in the mountains of Colorado for several decades. My friend kept everything for about 2 years but never had the time to devote to it, so he called me. Two truckloads and a lot of sweat later, everything found its way to my house. I am slowly going through the boxes and buckets and cases of type, so check back often for other items that I decide I can part with.
