Some trophies have all the polish of a classic sports car. Others bring to mind a crumbling Edwardian manor somewhere in the Dorset countryside. This example certainly belongs in the second category. Standing 8" tall, this charming old loving cup is inscribed, somewhat cryptically, “ACTIVITY AWARD/S-H-S/1937/GENEVIEVE BROOK.”

One is left to wonder what type of activities Genevieve engaged in that earned her such acclaim. Me? I think she read Keats and Jane Austen late into the night, secretly smoked French cigarettes under the covers, swam in the river by moonlight, and dreamed of racing horses. Not noteworthy enough? Fine, then. We’ll leave it to you to make up your own story.

In knocked-about shape, with lots of damage to the finish (in fact it’s practically nonexistent) and, although the mouth is no longer perfectly symmetrical, the trophy is far more charming in its decline. Would look perfect standing on top of a stack of old books. Romantic poetry, naturally.
