This athame is made from ash that was felled by a thunderstorm over six years ago. The blade is shaped in the flame-like kris pattern, with a beveled edge that traces its length. The handle is made of a goat horn. At the joining of the two materials, the hilt is wrapped with oil-tanned chamois skin and soft brown deerskin thong. The hilt is also decorated with semi-precious stones, including a triangular piece of turquoise and six beads. End-to-end, the athame is about 10 1/2 inches long.

Ash wood has beautiful grain, and also has an interesting history in magick and the supernatural. Believers in the Norse gods believe that the World Tree, Yggdrasil, is an ash tree, and it is from that tree that Odin hung suspended before he received the gift of the runes. In Norse shamanic practice, the ash tree thus represents the path that joins the Lower World, the Middle World, and the Upper World.

More magickal properties of ash: To the Celts, ash was a wood of balance, containing energy from which wands of personal power were crafted. This is because ash is strong, and even its most slender limbs are hard to break.

Ash wood makes a traditional Yule log. Druid wands were often made of ash and carved with decorations. Ash wands are good for healing, general and solar magic. Put fresh ash leaves under your pillow to stimulate psychic dreams and prosperity. An herb of the sun, ash brings light into the hearth at the winter solstice.

Qualities associated with ash include wisdom and spiritual knowledge when meditated upon. Oak, ash and thorn were called the Faerie Triad. Ash is often used for the shaft of a witch’s broom stick.

The goat whose horn is part of this athame, was killed humanely. The creation of this athame was done with respect to the Powers, but the athame has not been dedicated or consecrated to any Power, God, or Goddess, as that is best done by the user of the athame. The goat horn has been sterilized, and the entire athame ritually cleansed.
