This delicate oval-shaped plate was made in Gien, the French capital of 'faïence' (porcelain). The bottom of the piece has the potter's mark from Gien, in the Loire valley, south of Paris.

"Pompadour" refers to Madame de Pompadour, official chief mistress of French king, Louis XV, from 1745. Her taste for Rococo interiors lead her to be responsible for the development of a porcelain manufacturing centre, at Sèvres, which became one of the most famous in Europe.

This dish is decorated with a pair of branches bearing pink roses and buds, lending a romantic feel to the piece.

Excellent vintage condition.
