36.5 inches. 10.5 ounces. From the trunk of a young Ironwood Tree. (In Northern New England, this tree is smaller, often only a shrub, and in some cases, actually tougher than it's close relative from the South.) With a "Foot" made of hard rubber, gasket-like, material - good for walks around town and down country lanes. A cane tip is also provided for off-trail Wanders. ONe of a kind. Hand carved.
At The Lineage Holder's Workshop, each of our unique creations is inspired by something we find in the individual wood - its external shapes, internal ring structure, Root, Branch or trunk - the impression of its unique growth biography. This is why each design is so different in appearance and suggested use. In terms of "The Work of Making," our leaning has always been toward healing, of individual people, groups, ecosystems, our planet, and so on. Many of our pieces are, however modeled on Martial Arts Tools.
This short, strong staff is intended for Power Walking and also attendance at bedside or treatment room. It is modeled on The Short Fighting Stick that originates in many cultures around the world, often as an answer to restrictions on the lower classes as to the carrying and use of swords. The short stick is not much use against a highly trained swordsman. However, the general constabulary is often put to a disadvantage when confronted by the short fighting stick. In the hands of a fast, agile, and preferably short person, it advantages a strategy for relieving a more strongly armed opponent of their degree of authority. In Ireland, a style developed in which the short stick fighter was trained to duck under and attack from the rear. Similarly, this strategy has a parallel in the Healing Arts - fast, decisiveness and in-close approach to the pathogenic influence, which relies equally on skill and trust in ones own, split second intuition.
We have found in a few Tai Chi Schools, the preservation of practical healing applications. Assessing a fighting implement - for example a stick or staff - a Master will assess its potential effectiveness, paying less attention to iconographic symbolism: Feeling the heft, Sighting along its length, to determine its specific fit to purpose. We have tried to learn the healing aspects, with little to interest in the martial. When this little piece of wood came to us, there was something about its hardness and resilience that suggested the short fighting stick - particularly, the Irish style, in this case.
