FRANCE ARCHITECTURE ART OBJECT (1) Manganese Violet pastel.

Form and texture arch and bend the shadows around this clay architectural object. Designed after the sharply pointed rooftops and stoney facades of the old French country carriage houses, this modern form represents a sense of home - in this case, in the rustic old châteaux still standing in France today.

The remarkable colors are achieved with the methods I love from the Old World, with authentic and precious pigments ground by big granite millstones in the windmill De Kat in Holland. The windmill's 21 meter sails have powered the grinding of Earth's minerals into color for Dutch artists since 1781. Some, quarried from Italy, France, Bohemia, Afghanistan, and Spain, are the first ancient pigments known to primitive artists. Methods developed in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries of weathering minerals, or extracting naturally occurring minerals from bits of earth, volcanic rock, semi-precious stone, vegetables and metals are often the same methods used today in the old world pigments I use in my work. Even in ancient times, they were known as the most beautiful colors imaginable. I hope that you treasure these old pigments as much as I do.
