Natural Wood Bullroarer *Hazel* for Inspiration!

This is a bullroarer made from a superb piece of Hazel wood. Bullroarers are whirled round on the end of a length of cord and as they twist through the air they create a sound quite unlike anything else; an atmospheric hum that seems to resonate with the very bones of Mother Earth and can be varied with the speed of the swing as well as the length of the cord. They are used to call the spirits of the ancestors or local guardians, or to keep away any malevolent entities. Although most commonly associated with the Australian aboriginal people, artifacts like this have been found connected to many primitive cultures throughout the world and are increasingly being used by modern witches and pagans of all kinds to create sacred space.

Hazel is pretty much the archetypal witch's wood of choice, for almost all occasions, but I feel it's understated beauty is too often not made the most of. The colouring is not showy or intense, but the subtle neutrals have a charm of their own. This piece is simply stunning, with knots, swirly grain patterns and some almost luminous iridescence. There's even a small bark inclusion along one side, because I use small pieces of timber and have to make the most of them. :-) It comes with about four feet of waxed cotton cord attached with a knot that won't twist loose (especially important if you want to avoid the hazard of high-speed flying missiles or the hassle of trying to find it in the undergrowth!) I use waxed cotton cord because unlike most types of cord or string it is braided, not twisted. Twisted cord will unravel over time from the constant twisting of the wooden blade in the air, which has a weakening effect on the cord as well as looking unsightly. However, even this type of braided cord will wear out eventually, and no knot is infallible, so please check it at regular intervals and replace it if neccessary.

As usual, all the work was done the traditional way by hand, with no help from power tools of any kind. Both the cord and the oiled finish are completely free of animal products and there are no metal parts. The wood was organically grown and ethically gathered, I never cut trees simply for my crafting but utilise wood that has to be removed for reasons of access, habitat management or tree health. In my opinion, no amount of libations, non-native crystals or small silver coins scattered about the countryside make up for hacking great lumps off an otherwise healthy tree just to line your pockets. It doesn't seem to fit in with the ethic of my spiritual path and can hardly be classed as walking softly, doing no harm and leaving the world better than you found it.

Providing I have a piece of wood large enough, I can make you a custom bullroarer a different size to this one, a slightly different shape, or with runes or other symbols burnt into the wood. Any of the symbols you see in my shop can be put on a bullroarer. I can also add a bead or toggle handle to the end of the cord to ensure it doesn't cut into your fingers during particularly energetic swinging and make it easier to hang on to. Just drop me a convo if you'd like one custom made to your own specifications, the only criterion for bullroarers is that the piece of wood be fairly thin and longer than it is wide.

Hazel is an exceptionally magical tree, as well as being extremely useful on the physical plane. It is best known for being the Celtic Tree of Wisdom, and is said to bring luck, fertility, intelligence and inspiration. Together with Elder, it is said to be one of the best woods for wands. If you hang it in your window it will protect your house from lightning, and it is also supposed to help make wishes come true!

Size: Just over six and a half inches long, one and seven eighths inches wide and a generous quarter of an inch thick.
167mm x 46mm x 7mm.

It will come with a list of the magical properties of the wood, a picture and care instructions.

Please exercise common sense whilst using this bullroarer... if you bash it against animals or people it will hurt, and if you bash it against things like walls, ceilings, furniture or trees then something's likely to get damaged.

For a full list of the woods I might have available as well as their magical properties, associated folklore and a bunch of other stuff, check out my blog at: http://www.mazedasastoat.blogspot.com/
