SUPER RARE... really one of a kind ring. Etched and then painted in gold is a stork in the grass and underneath the stork's protective stance is a rough cut diamond, representing an egg.

The bird is beautifully painted on the onyx stone....this style of ring was very popular during the Victorian Era, usually had a flower (sometimes known as the "Rose of Sharon" ring)..I have never seen one painted so well. There is great detail throughout the ring, even flowers are engraved on the shoulders of the ring!

The notion of giving a gift to a woman after giving birth is not a new concept...actually it is very old. And here is a fine example of that.

The story of the stork bringing babies was extremely popular during Victorian times. Once a Victorian woman was 'showing' her pregnancy, she never went out socially and in the last trimester, she probably never left the house. Children were literally told that a stork brought their new baby brother or sister....how? They lived with their relatives, neighbor or friend during the 'worrisome weeks'...a few weeks before and after the woman gave birth. Infant mortality was a major concern during the Victorian times.

Storks were symbolic of prosperity and happiness...this may have contributed to the idea that if storks brought good things to people, they could be used to explain the arrival of babies, in the form of a pleasant fairytale.

CONDITION: Very good, some wear commensurate with age, please see pics...the band is a bit out of round, an old sizing at the back of the ring.
