This Moth Lamp Hat was inspired by a variety of beautiful antique lamps. It was formed using the needle felting process in which you stab loose wool repeatedly with a barbed needle until in mattes together into solid felt. Patterns, colors, and other details are then felted on in the same manner. This is a labor-intensive process...dozens of hours of work went into making this unique hat. The four strips around the head have wires inside to keep the hat upright. Between these are hand crochetted panels made from golden thread. Some of the moths are suspended in flight on thin copper wires. There is a button at the base that allows it to come apart enough for your head to fit through into the hat.

My main objectives are reviving the everyday wear of exquisite hats and elevating their artistic merit. I make sculptural yet wearable needle-felted hats which appear both as abstract forms and figurative creatures. The animal forms contribute to the sculptural quality of the hats and transform them from accessories into art pieces that evoke feelings of timelessness, whimsy and the bizarre. Inspiration for these singular creations comes from synthesizing research of vintage hats, couture hats, visual art, and animals. The goal of this series is to redefine the boundary between fashion and art and to push the needle-felting process beyond “craft” into the realm of fine art.

Please feel free to message me if you have any questions or would like to commission me to make any other type of animal hat.
