This chuppah, my own, was pieced together from nearly 100 pieces of fabric. My husband and I were living in Jerusalem when we met and got engaged, and we knew most of our friends there would not be able to come to our wedding in the States. Their presence during our ceremony was very important to us. I asked our friends to bring pieces of fabric to our engagement party in Jerusalem, which I then spent the next two months sewing together into this very colorful and eclectic chuppah, which became a symbol of the first community we shared.

The fabrics we were given included fine silks, lace, burlap, cotton, needlepoint, and even a prayer rug. The diversity of cloth reflects our diverse community of Israeli and Palestinian friends. It also created a special sewing challenge! If you are interested in embarking on a project like this, please contact me about pricing, as it will depend largely on the parameters we set and whether your friends follow directions. There are other participatory ways to create a chuppah. Please see: http://www.etsy.com/listing/81625649/chuppah-double-sided-heirloom-quilt. This quilt can be created less expensively by sending out fewer squares, and by making it single-sided rather than double-sided.
