Lovely Victorian Pinchbeck and Onyx Mourning Hair Brooch or Pendant

This Cameo brooch belonged to my geat, great, great grandmother. It dates back to the 1870s to 1880s as best as we can remember.

The brooch is a rose gold colored pincheck metal. It is surrounded by 16 diamond shaped black onyx stones. It measures 1 1/4" long and 1" wide. It has a pin on the back as well as a loop to be worn as a pendant on a chain.

Victorians were enthusiastic about mourning jewelry. Queen Victoria remained passionately in love with Prince Albert long after his death, laying out his clothes daily for decades after he died, and dressing herself in black, and wearing mourning jewelry. Victorians followed her example, and. are famous for their "momento mori" jewelry: memories of the departed, usually a piece of hair (often braided or woven into an elaborate pattern) or a photo were placed into a special compartment on a piece of jewelry
