*¨¨* Sorry folks, this one's a reserved listing and not for public sale *¨¨*

Tanzanite is a rare and highly prized gemstone and one whose sparkling bluish/violet colour complements silver particularly well. It's mined in only one place in the world : the Merelani Hills near Arusha in northern Tanzania. Due to its rarity and the promotional efforts of Tiffanys (New York) since the 1980s Tanzanite has become one of the most coveted (and pricey) gemstones in the world today. As a result of some judicious buying however, I'm pleased to be able to offer some nice Tanzanite specimens here at Salon Petite at prices around 60% of retail.

There's different varieties of Tanzanite on the market ranging from a stunning deep purplish blue (commonly labelled 'D-Block') to a softer more popular bluish violet hue. The most common colour is a super sparkly lilac that - due to a quality called 'polychromaticity' - shifts between bluish and 'mauvish' depending on the angle from which you look at it.

These earrings feature a matched pair of genuine* pale purplish-blue Tanzanite gems set in solid cast sterling silver settings. The stones were earth-mined in Merelani, Tanzania and are 100% natural - that's to say, no heat or chemical treatment processes have been applied to them to enhance their natural 'VVS' ('near-Flawless') clarity, and superior luster and colour saturation. Due to the polychromaticity the true colour of a Tanzanite gem is often hard to capture accurately with a camera. These particular specimens have a soft violet blue hue, about the same tone as Rose de France only blueish rather than mauvish (see photo #4). With a Refractive Index of 1.699 (confirmed by my testing) - the gems split light just like a top quality Sapphire or Spinel too - which is to say, they're extremely sparkly.

Alone, the gems total 0.84 carats and measure 5mm diameter. Set, each earring weighs 1.1 grams. Please note that the settings used here aren't the flimsy budget 'snap-tite' varieties typically seen in discount mall jewellery shops. These ones are rather top of the line Aussie designs, solid, built to last, and featuring thicker style 0.75mm diameter posts (hard to bend!)

As with all Salon Petite earrings the prong tips holding the gems have been micro-sanded and polished to limit the chances of the metalwork catching in hair or on clothing. Sterling silver butterfly clutches as well as clear silicone stoppers will be included for your comfort and convenience in fitting.

Presentation for the earrings includes a hinge-lid gift box lined with Japanese Unryu papers. Unryu is a handmade designer paper that contains strands of plant fiber for colour and contrast - very pretty. I really enjoy dressing up my creations for display and gift-giving. If you’d like to see a photo of the presentation style do please drop me a line and I'll be happy to send you a photo.

Fake Tanzanite

* By 'genuine' I mean the stones are authentic - not 'lab created' lookalikes, nor Swarovski crystal, nor cubic zirconia of a Tanzanite-like hue. There seems to be quite a lot of synthetic Tanzanite passed off as genuine on the internet these days. Alleged 'Tanzanite' selling for less than $250/carat by vendors who aren't prepared to certify a 'Refractive Index' rating of between 1.690~1.700 for their products ... well hey, buyer beware! They may well be peddling synthetic crystal that's liable to fade to near-transparent over the years.
