A vintage wooden Zoo Line Pelican desk accessory. It's ingeniously designed for holding paperclips. The hinged bill opens to reveal a red "tongue" which is actually a magnet. This allows one to get paperclips out of the mouth easily. Nice heavy hardwood construction, feet are firmly attached, but I have seen some models with movable legs. Typical of this figurine, the feet and legs are made of a softer and lighter wood.It is marked "Copyright 1959" on the base and still has a foil label marked "Zoo-Line" on the foot. Beautiful wood grain texture, with some light wear, a few small nicks in the back of the neck, lower beak and on the top of the head, maybe these were there from production? (see photos). I love the design...from a simpler time before all toys were made out of plastic.
