I painted this cicada on a real library card catalogue card for the book “Musical Insects.” The subject category for this book says “Insect Sounds.” Cicadas make an enormous amount of noise, enough to drive us humans crazy, but to them it must sound like a symphony.

This will take you back to the days of searching a library card catalogue for that elusive book — before all of a library's holdings were listed on computer.

This is an original gouache, watercolor and metallic pigment painting on a one-of-a-kind 3 x 5 inch library card. The cicada is in shimmering blue with gold accents. Ships within 1-3 days of receipt of order in a stiff cardboard photo mailer.

These cards look wonderful displayed on bookshelves, mantels, end tables, desks, pinned to your bulletin board or set up with collections of books — especially vintage books. To see more of my hand-painted library cards, visit the “Library Card Catalog” section of my shop at
