New Mexico Sky Musing, Number Eight ~ Original contemporary abstract New Mexico landscape painting by artist Dawn Chandler

A summertime night sky — that's what I'm seeing here in that navy blue panel. And those tiny creamy grey dots? Stars or planets, surely!

Yet to the right that sky blue vertical passage... Is it a memory of daylight or a promise of what is sure to come once nighttime fades? Either — or both! But I adore that tiny little distant tree on the crest of the mesa.

This is one of the only paintings (so far) in the New Mexico Sky Musings series that incorporates my floating swatches of color. At first glance they may seem mere "rectangles"; I see them as windows, passages.

Or perhaps they represent a memory of some kind...

Another possibility is that they represent spirits: This one stands for "This" (whatever "This" might be for you); that one stands for "That"....

Regardless, to my eye they add movement and a bit of daring to the composition, inviting my eye to float around the painting and land on these turquoise passages and pause a moment, before getting lost again among those stars in the night sky....

As with other paintings in this series, notice the words ghosted in the background. These descriptive bits of text stem from a journal entry I made in which I wrote about my love affair with the landscape of Northern New Mexico — especially that of the Taos area. Look carefully as the words reveal a sort of poetry.....

Here is a bit more about my semi-abstract landscape paintings

"Rarely when we recall a journey across the land, is our memory in sharp focus. Rather, our memories become a sequence of impressions—a collage of the vistas, colors, textures and shapes that we encountered along our journey’s path.

"My paintings are a celebration of journeys across the land. By merging traditional landscape imagery with fragments of text and abstract elements, my semi-abstract landscapes suggest land and place in a way that invites the viewer to linger. More than ‘nature studies’ or simple abstractions of the landscape, for me these paintings are deeper expressions of not only journeys in the outdoors, but the passage of time and transience of life. Paint spatters and swirls suggest the movements of birds, often great flocks of them. Vertical lines divide the space into passageways and chapters of time, thought and experience. Sometimes even fragments of language—excerpts from my journals—emerge through paint layers further beckoning the the viewer to linger and consider the journeys evoked within each painting."

This piece of art is gorgeous and enriches my soul every time I even glance at it, but perhaps more important is the amazing way Dawn's incredible, mindful spirit seems to come forth in every brushstroke. The awesome "extras" sent along with the painting really spoke to my soul, and I feel such gratitude for having this beautiful painting — this awesomely captured moment in time — in my home! The painting itself is on a rigid panel about 1/8" thick, masterfully done, packaged perfectly, and arrived quickly. In fact, the framing took quite a bit longer than the shipping. This is my second purchase from Dawn, and it definitely won't be my last. Highly recommended.

This is my second painting from Dawn. I absolutely love it. Dawn makes you feel like you have known her for years with her heart felt thank you cards and impeccable communication. I adore her as much as her paintings.

This artwork was absolutely beautiful on the site, but is even more in person. I bought this for my husband (who is a Scoutmaster for our BSA troop) who has been to Philmont many times and is his favorite place to go. He was so excited when he opened up to see this. Thank you for helping bring back memories for him. He is no longer able to go to Philmont due to health issues which saddens him. This beautiful artwork made him smile and tear up which was the best reaction I could ask for. Thank you, Dawn.
