This antique vanity jar comes from the remaining inventory of L&L Antiques. L&L was a cornerstone of the Old Town Laurel antique community for over 30 years. When L&L's matriarch (Louise) passed away ten years ago, her family put the shop's inventory into storage as they struggled to come to grips with the loss of their beloved. I've been close friends with Louise's daughter since high school and offered to help sell off L&L's remaining inventory now that the family has had time to grieve and is ready to let go of Louise's mementos.

From the Victorian era through the early 1950s, vanity jars were a common accessory on a fashionable lady's dressing table. They were designed to any myriad of powders, lotions, hair pins, and others brickabrack. Made from thick-walled, semi-translucent cobalt toned glass, this example features an intricately detailed, hand-painted gold and ivory floral design on its lid and circumferencing its base. The brass lid hinge and clasp are in perfect order. The lid opens easily and closes securely. This piece contains no markings to definitively date it, but Louise's daughter tells me it dates to the late 1800s. Closed, its external dimensions are 2-1/2" diameter x 1-1/4" tall.

Louise's daughter is offering a 10% discount off her mother's original asking price for this rare antique, even though it has surely increased in value since Louise priced it years ago.
