Vintage French Jelly Jar or Pot de Confiture with Vintage Couvercle

A twelve faceted glass jar from France for jelly, jam conserves or confiture. I have matched this with a lovely old couvercle (or lid) that I found which just happens to fit on top.

These old jars are still much in demand in France and are getting harder to find and thus more expensive. These are the vintage glass jars which don't have the grooves for a screw top lid - they would have been covered with wax paper or a beautiful gingham cloth circle tied with raffia.

Would make a lovely gift filled with goodies.

Or use as a pretty vase - letting the sun shine through the faceted sides.

This particular pot is a large one and holds 750grammes. It is marked '750G' on the bottom along with the maker 'Meisenthal'. Glass has been produced in Meisenthal, in North East France, since the early 18th century, and since the 19th century Christmas decorations from Meisenthal became famous.

It stands 4.75 inches tall and measures a generous 4 inches across the top.

These jars were made with thick glass and are very heavy.

A few nice bubbles in the glass, which we like, and a nibble out of the rim which is hardly noticeable but I mention it for accuracy. The glass itself is lovely and clear and sparkly without scratches or whitening.

The lid just happened to fit on top nicely - obviously not making it airtight or anything - so I matched them up together. The lid is 4 inches tall with a 5.25 inch diameter and also has some bubbles and a small chip underneath the rim. A pretty pattern and cut glass knob make this a nice addition to the jar or you could use it as a cloche to display something teeny tiny as it is only about 2 inches high inside.

Thank you for looking.
