From the 1800's, this is one of the largest size ginger jars made in this fashion. I have several smaller ones in my collection, but ths one is almost 6 inches tall. Most seem to be around 4 - 4 1/2 inches tall.

I don't know what decades these were imported from China, but evidently they have been excavated from sites where Chinese expatriate workers threw them into the trash heaps of worksites in the 1800s. Perhaps Shiwan pottery.

Dimensions: 5 5/8 inches tall x 6 inches wide at widest point; mouth 2 3/4 inches from outer rims. 17 inches diameter at widest point.

This gorgeous ginger pot has 6 panelled sides, each depicting symbolic flower images impressed into the clay mold giving a majolica effect. The pot is a deep, translucent, dark jade green. The clay is yellow. More beautiful than the photos depict...I had too much light at the window.

Glaze drips deliciously run past the border onto the bare clay base. Scrolls decorate the upper portion of the hexagonal form. There is wonderful craquelure, age crazing, all over. Inside, the pot is rough, and areas where the potter smoothed the slabs can be seen.

Very good condition!
