This is a great Victorian mourning brooch circa 1870-1880. It has the old brass C clasp pinback. Judging from the texture of this brooch in the back, it's made from pressed horn. Pressed horn is one of the lesser known materials used to simulate Jet in the Victorian era. From the front the brooch appears to be made from Vulcanite or bog oak. The shape is unusual as it has a round geometrically carved center with a scrolling frame around it. It measures 1.5 inches in diameter.

A wondeful piece for the collector!
