Beautiful tea cups and saucers, made by Ashworth Bros in Hanley, England, which is in Staffordshire. They feature a stunning black and white floral design. This design is simple, classic and elegant...to me it is very French in style.

They are rather heavy, as expected with ironstone. The cups do not contain a maker's mark, but several of them are stamped with a "15". The backs of the saucers have the Ashworth Bros. mark indicating the Mayfield pattern, as well as the "ASHWORTH" imprint, and a number imprint (8/90?); several are also stamped with an "18". The maker's mark is the one used between 1862 and 1890, placing the age of the cups & saucers somewhere between 122 and 150 years old.

The saucers are 6" in diameter, and are 1" high at the raised rim. The cups are 2 5/8" tall, and 4 1/8" across, including the handle.

As expected with their significant age, there is small, fine crazing throughout. There are bumps and bubbles, some of which are dark, and some paint gone astray, here-and-there; these all appear to be manufacturer's flaws. There are no chips or breaks on the saucers. The tea cups have a few rough spots on the rims, and a few chips on the bottom rims (where they sit on the table), which have become slightly discolored. One cup has a 1" long hairline near the handle, which has become discolored; it does go through to the outside of the cup.

Overall these are in lovely vintage condition, and are actually much better than I would expect of tableware that is well over 100 years old, and was probably used on many occasions, perhaps every day.

Because these are ironstone, they are quite durable, and could still be used for tea in your dream cottage. Please note that if you do use them, I recommend that you wash them by hand, not in the dishwasher.

So pretty, these would make a wonderful addition to your transferware collection. Because they are in classic black & white, they will also mix in well with your more contemporary pieces.
