A tiny little white bird nests happily in the glossy celadon green bottom of this lovely mug, waiting to be discovered. He'll be a delightful little surprise after finishing a cup of milk (hot cocoa? soup?). I started using similar cups at home to motivate my picky eater: “Okay, drink enough that you can see the bunny's head.” Every kid who uses one at my house is sure to ask for it next time; it was the first thing one of my 5-year-old's playdates said to me when I picked the girls up from kindergarten one morning: “Remember last time I came and you had cups with little animals?”

I made my first surprise mug for a dear friend 7 years ago. She remembered having something similar as a child, and loved the version I made for her enough that I made more. And more...

2 1/2" bowl diameter, 2" high. Hand thrown and altered form. White domestic porcelain fired to a sturdy cone 6, it is food, dishwasher, and microwave safe, though pottery always appreciates a little TLC, especially with wee animals in it :). I promise you: this quality high-fired work is much sturdier and chip-resistant (and thus kid-friendly!) than your standard ceramic found at a big-box store.
