This pysanka is made from a real duck egg, emptied and rinsed before decorating. It measures approx. 2 3/4" long by 1 3/4" in diameter.

This egg shell is decorated by me using the Ukrainian wax-resist method of Pysanka. It is an ancient art form from the Ukraine and the methods I use are very traditional. Melted beeswax is carefully written on the bare egg shell to cover up any part of the design that needs to remain white. Then the egg is dipped into yellow dye and the yellow parts are covered with wax. Each subsequent color is done in the same way, always going from lightest to darkest. At the end, the egg is covered with many layers of dye and wax. The wax is then carefully melted and wiped off to reveal the stunning design. I then protect it with a layer of polyurethane finish.

The pysanka should not be subjected to direct sunlight in order to preserve the vibrancy of color. When stored it should be allowed to breathe. If care is taken, this lovely decoration may last for generations.
